Panels

The six kinds of panel, how to switch between them, and how tabs, history and favorites work in file panels.

The six kinds

PanelWhat it shows
FilesA folder, as a list (like Far Manager) or as a tree (like Windows Explorer)
FTPA server reached over FTP or SFTP: first your registered sites, then the files of the one you open
Secure storageAn encrypted file that is worked with as a drive
BrowserA web page
TerminalShells in tabs: Command Prompt, PowerShell and the others found on your computer
PreviewWhat the cursor of the other panel is on

A panel remembers where it was in each kind. Go from Files to Browser and back, and you return to the same folder and the same view.

Kinds you do not use can be turned off in the Settings; they then disappear from the menus.

List and tree

The first button in a file panel's header switches between the two views of the same folder.

In the list, Up and Down move the cursor, Left jumps to the first entry and Right to the last, Enter goes into a folder and Backspace goes up. Start typing a name to jump to it.

In the tree, the arrows move and open folders in place, and Enter picks. The two panels are independent. Turn on the link button in the tree's toolbar and a folder picked in the tree also opens in the other panel.

Marking files

In the list, Insert or Space marks the file under the cursor and Ctrl+A marks all. Commands such as copy, move and delete act on the marked files, or on the file under the cursor when nothing is marked.

Tabs

Ctrl+T opens the current folder in another tab. "Open in new tab" in the right-click menu opens the folder under the cursor. Ctrl+W, or a click with the mouse wheel, closes a tab. Ctrl+PageUp and Ctrl+PageDown go to the previous and the next tab.

The tab strip appears once there are two tabs. Each tab has its own history, and tabs are remembered between sessions.

Getting around

  • Alt+Left and Alt+Right go back and forward, as in Explorer.
  • Alt+F12 lists the folders visited lately in either panel.
  • Ctrl+\ goes to the top of the drive.
  • The path in the header is made of its folders: click one to go there. Click beside them, or on the last one, to type a path.

Coming back to a folder puts the cursor where it was.

Favorites

The star in a panel's toolbar adds the current place to the favorites, or takes it out. Files and Browser keep their own: folders for one, web pages for the other.

Favorites are in the location menu after the drives, and in the Alt+F1 / Alt+F2 menu. "Edit favorites..." at the foot of the location menu opens the editor, where you can drag to reorder, make folders, rename and delete. Nothing changes until you press Save.

Preview

Set one panel to Preview and it follows the cursor of the other. PDFs, pictures and text are shown in their viewers. A folder is shown by what is in it. ZIP, RAR and 7z archives list their files with their sizes, without being unpacked.
