Editors and viewers

Which editor opens which file, how to save, and how to switch to another editor with Open with.

Opening a file

F4 opens the file under the cursor over the whole window, as Far's editor does. Esc or F10 goes back to the panels; when there is unsaved work, the app asks first.

The editor is chosen by the file's extension. Open with in the editor's header switches to another one that can read the file.

For pictures, Image metadata and Steganography are also offered under Open with.

Saving

  • Save writes the file back where it was opened from. Ctrl+S and F2 do the same.
  • Save as... opens a dialog in the file's folder with a name the editor suggests.

The DICOM and log viewers only show their file, so they have neither.

Files on servers and in storages

F3 and F4 work on a file on an FTP or SFTP server as well: saving writes it back to the server. In a secure storage they show and edit a file without writing an unprotected copy to the disk.

New files

Shift+F4 in a file panel asks for a name and opens the new file in the editor for its extension, so notes.md starts in the Markdown editor and data.json in the JSON editor.
